This is an urgent appeal to the general public of Hong Kong to show our support for the Sheung Shui Masjid (mosque) and Elderly Home project. We request everyone to petition the Chief Executive of Hong Kong Ms. Carrie Lam to use her authority for the benefit of minority communities and return the land to UMAH for continuation of hoarding works and the construction as its rightful user for social and community purpose.
**Note: the Petition is a separate and independent action from any other legal relief available to and being pursued by the recipient of the Memorial. IMPORTANT: No donation is required from you for this cause at present. Instead, we request you to please forward this petition to at least 5 of your contacts for their generous support, and continue on to get more on board!
Over the last 2 decades, this project has faced uncountable challenges. Finally, after overcoming many hurdles, as the hoarding works started in August 2020 and the project progressed, the Lands Department re-enterred the land on 1 September and visited the site on 2 September, ordering all construction work to stop immediately. They further announced that the land must be vacated by 17 September.
This is an extremely unfortunate situation and we need everyone's help immediately!
Here's why we need your help.
In 2010-2019 UMAH underwent restructuring which Alhamdulillah was concluded successfully in 2019. Protests disrupted HK economy in 2019 and in 2020 the Covid-19 pandemic is still hampering all our lives until now. All unusual and uncontrollable events which delayed the project.
On 2 September 2020, the Lands Department of Hong Kong visited the Project site and ordered immediate cessation of hoarding works and workers to leave the site. They concurrently issue a Lands Department memorial re-entry stating that the land private treaty grant is cancelled.
This comes to us all as a shock because just two months ago the Buildings Department approved our application for the commencement of hoarding works, and a contractor has already started working on site. This would mean losing this land not only for the Masjid but just as equally, a milestone project for an elderly home for Hong Kong residents, within the same compound which is 70% of the total project.
This risks losing a chance of providing community care for our elderly that are most in need.
Please spread the word, generate awareness about this matter as much as possible and encourage your friends and family to show your support. Let's voice out our concerns peacefully.
Last but not least, it is also important to note that the Sheung Shui Masjid and Elderly Care Home is not exclusive to Muslims, but also for the local Hong Kong community at large. Through this project, as Muslims have been part and parcel of Hong Kong, it would be a symbol of the harmonious relationship that exists between the local Muslims as well as the local Chinese.
