The Issue

On Thursday, June 18, 2020, the Ogden International High School community learned about the elimination of Mr. Simeon Henderson's position at the school. Mr. Henderson was the Dean of Students, Girls Basketball Coach, and Softball Coach for 5 years at Ogden HS.

During this climate of systemic racism and inequities our children are facing, Ogden HS needs a figure that students can go to for support. Mr. Henderson has been that person students go to for the social emotional support, chats about life, talks about conflicts, words of wisdom, to the simple pick-me-up (smile, handshake, nod) that the students need.

The Ogden community is calling for the administration and the LSC to find creative ways to restructure the school budget to reinstate Mr. Henderson's Dean of Students position effective immediately. With increasing student enrollment at the West Campus, cutting Mr. Henderson's position is a detrimental decision to the school community and will negatively implicate the following: school climate and culture, trauma-informed interventions, restorative justice, and social emotional support. He is a vital part of Ogden's success and we cannot afford to start the new school year (2020-2021) amidst racial epidemic without his mentorship. Mr. Henderson breaks down barriers and is a symbol of success our students look up to.

"I’m writing to share a few of the things Mr. Henderson did that really helped me and writing to bring him back!! Mr. Henderson is one of the most amazing teachers/staff I’ve ever had. The fact that Ogden let him go makes me feel very angry because he shows he really cares for us. For example when someone is feeling down he speaks in the announcements to give them a hug in the hallway of Ogden. Whenever I personally talk to him he always asks how I am and how my family is showing he really cares for everyone including people outside of school. He always motivates me to be the best I can be and has a famous quote here at Ogden which is “be symbolic.” I really appreciate everything he has done and I don’t want him to leave. He makes me and others trust Ogden and helps us trust the other teachers at Ogden. He brings a different meaning of love in Ogden because of him Ogden has love. Please don’t let a teacher who has a big impact on us go

us go. Thank you!"

"From my last years at Ogden, it is beyond sad to hear that Mr. Henderson will not be at

Ogden. He is over all the most down to earth security we have there. Will be goofy when it's the time comes and serious when the time comes. As a former student at Ogden, I urge for the school to keep Mr. Henderson for the wellbeing of the students and school safety."

“Let’s take this seriously and get better, play together and Win!"

"I’m a rising senior at Ogden now. I just been informed Mr. Henderson will not be at Ogden?! I’m honestly in disbelief. He’s the only one who really truly cares about the students; I mean that wholeheartedly. Back when I was a Sophomore, I was in a really bad place and was diagnosed with depression. Coming back to school, Mr. Henderson was the only person I remembered who would check up on me every single day to ensured I was okay. He would give me high fives when I told him I was feeling better and made sure I when I would leave I had a smile on my face. He was like that with every student. Every time I see him in the hallways, it’s all smiles around him. Kids being themselves. He’s the face of Ogden! He’s what makes Ogden a safe and fun environment! There’s NO ONE like him! Letting Mr. Henderson go would be the BIGGEST MISTAKE Ogden has EVER MADE! I would lose my respect to Ogden. Letting Mr. Henderson go would make it clear this school does not care about their students one bit; I will not stay at a school who claims they’re

here for their students when in reality they’re letting go the best employees."
---

"It has been brought to my attention that Ogden has recently decided to let Mr. Henderson go. As an active member and involved parent in the Ogden community, I am very disappointed and shocked with this decision. Mr. Henderson is a crucial and critical staff member for all of those who attend Ogden. He is an exceptional staff member, coach, and all around great human being. I can’t stress enough to you how important and imperative it is that his position be reconsidered. Ogden is a school that prides itself in having a diverse group of students from different backgrounds and Mr. Henderson is an African American male who caters and understands all backgrounds. During these times in which people are advocating for black lives and trying to reform current policies, Mr. Henderson has actively exemplified and participated in movements for reform and overall betterment for people. His impact with students and the love for him is widely known and shown daily on campus.

On a personal note, my daughter struggled with mental health issues along with a difficult separation between me and my former husband and Mr. Henderson literally saved her life. Everytime I went to Ogden, Mr. Henderson always had a conversation with me and kept me informed on how my daughter was doing or if anything was happening that I didn’t know about. He cares about all the students and is aware of their struggles and accomplishments on a personal level.

In sum, I’m at a loss for words and I know for a fact everyone including staff, parents, and community members are devastated with this sudden decision. I would be more than happy to organize a petition or help in any way to bring Mr. Henderson back. Great human beings and educators like him are hard to find and are worth fighting for."
---

Mr. Henderson has helped me cope with my anger and helped control my emotions. He has been like an uncle to me. He has been a role model to me and has helped me push myself more than I thought I could. He has not only helped me but he has also helped the school. He has been great at enforcing and leading Ogden to its victories when it comes to the sports he coaches. I honestly can’t express how hurt I am to know that Ogden will be trying to lose literally the pride and joy of the school."
---

"Henderson has had a bigger impact on me than anyone else at that school. He has always been the person that I can come talk to when I’m not feeling well mentally or not having a good day. Henderson is the most understanding and helpful person in that school. Without him a lot of the kids at the school, including myself would not be well right now. He has helped me through the worst times in my life, he made me feel comfortable with talking about my personal problems. Honestly he’s one of the main reasons that I am still alive today. A lot of kids are comfortable with talking to Henderson more than anyone else at the school. By taking him away, honestly you guys are ruining kids lives. Henderson has the biggest impacts on the kids at Ogden !! You guys can not take him away from us."
---

The news that Mr.Henderson was let off due to budget cuts was nothing but sadness. Mr. Henderson was one of the staff that greeted me every morning with a smile on his face and a wonderful and loud good morning. Mr. Henderson saw greatness in every student at Ogden, he believes in everyone. He always reminded everyone to have respect and care for others but also BESIMBOLIC. If I needed someone to talk to at the moment, I knew he would always be willing to listen. It deeply saddened my heart when I heard this news and I want to bring him back and we NEED to bring him back"
---

"Mr.Henderson has helped me in so many ways I can imagine. The advice he has given me will continue to stay with me many years through life. Over the years that I’ve known him I’ve come to him about schoolwork, boys, and etc, not once has he ever hesitated to give me the advice I needed. Freshmen year I was so overwhelmed with work which resulted me to just start crying and he was right there to help and checked on me every time to see if I was ok or if I needed anything Mr.Henderson treated us as if we were his own children and cared for us, Ogden is the way it is because he is one of the few people that actually cares for us."
