Abolish parking dibs in Chicago

Abolish parking dibs in Chicago

The Issue

Chicago "dibs" has gotten out of control and should be abolished with a formal decry from our appointed leaders.

The habit of reserving a public parking spaces on the street has evolved over the years to the point of property violence, physical threats and public intimidation. There is no more honor to "dibs" by the so-called "dibbers". Over the past decades citizens of Chicago used to treat "dibs" as a temporary solution to reserving a parking space that they dug out of immediately after a large snow fall for a short period of time. The practice was warranted for a day or two max, now neighbors are claiming stake to public parking for weeks on end after only clearing a visible path for their own car to exit. Old furniture, buckets, junk and other items of no value are placed throughout the streets of Chicago during the winter months with zero assistance from the Department of Streets and Sanitation to help solve the problem.

This petition is to call upon Mayor Lightfoot to step up and make a stance that the practice of "dibs" should once and for all be abolished. This practice does not demonstrate the "City of Big Shoulders" or a community that cares for one and other. Instead, doing nothing and allowing the practice to continue has led to many instances of property damage, physical violence and threatening behavior amongst the citizens of Chicago. If the city of Chicago had a clear plan to effectively remove snow as they do street cleaning, parking in the winter would become much more civil. The city should take a stance and pick up dibs on a regular basis allowing all citizen equal access to public parking.
