Decontaminate the Amazon

Decontaminate the Amazon
The Issue
Throughout the years of 1964 - 1990, the company Texaco (which has since been acquired by Chevron) established operations for oil drilling in an area located in the northern Ecuadorian Amazon. The company lacked sufficient technology and possessed inadequate safeguards for environmental preservation, and as a result of this, 18 billion gallons of extremely hazardous waste material was released into the streams and rivers from which native inhabitants obtained necessities such as fresh water and food. This severely endangered indigenous communities and contaminated the entire area in which families resided.
This action, which has remained unaccounted for by Chevron, has been the cause of thousands of deaths as a result of exposure to toxic chemicals. Communities and their economies within the exposed area have collapsed significantly, with essential resources being inaccessible and many inhabitants suffering from cancers as well as birth defects.
I am a seventh grade student interested in environmental science and benefiting the planet and its inhabitants. I consider it imperative that Chevron assume full responsibility for its actions so as to assist in reconstructing the native communities who have been so highly damaged. Through signing this petition, you can contribute to a strong statement that Chevron needs to take action now.
Thank You
