Since Chesterton's Oz Fest was stopped, residents of Chesterton and the tri-county area have looked for a festival that can top the Oz fest while simultaneously representing what it means to be a Chestertonian.

The "Hedge Fest" does this.

"Over the Hedge," the 2006 Dreamworks animated comedy movie, is set in Chesterton. Not only does it relate to Chesterton, but it has great potential to have a festival based on it. Family friendly activities like animal face painting, bouncy houses, bubble machines, and caricatures could entertain the children. Local restaurant favorites could cater the event, Westchester Library's "Bandstand Concert & Family Film Series" could present "Over the Hedge," European Market vendors would have another opportunity to provide their products, and a parade could run through Downtown Chesterton as the centerpiece of the festival.

"Hedge Fest" has economic benefits, too. The festival would act as a tourist boost and gain traction for the town. Local vendors would make a profit and money earned by the town could be used to fund the schools or upgrade the infrastructure in Chesterton.

It's due time Chesterton earns its place back on the map. As proud Chestertonians, or any members of the tri-county area of Porter County, we should acknowledge "Hedge Fest" as part of our rich and diverse culture.
