Recently, a former school principal at West Chester Christian School in Chester County, Pennsylvania was charged with molesting a first grader. Since his arrest, numerous former students have come forward with various accounts of physical, emotional and sexual abuse experienced at this school. Such cases of abuse span from 1975-present. I was a student from 1980-1989 and experienced "getting in trouble" and being spanked by male teachers numerous times, in addition to being emotionally abused. I was not a troublemaker, but it wasn't necessary to be one in order to experience corporal punishment and emotional abuse from teachers and administration. I remember getting on my knees each evening and praying to God that I would not get into trouble, as it seemed to be out of my control. Several male students reported having to take their pants down and be paddled by staff, including the perpetrator who was recently arrested (he even admitted to his pedophilia). Other former students have stated they reported various assaults and bullying to administration, only to have their accusations covered up and some reported experiencing expulsion. Parents have sent their children to this school in good faith, unaware of such atrocities occurring due to children assuming this was "normal." As a mental health professional, I know personally and professionally that emotional scars run deep and impact the rest of our lives. I am asking the Chester County DA's office to investigate this school and hold former and current administration accountable, so that no other children will suffer.
