Cheshire Children First: Adopt Redistricting Scenario D That Minimizes Disruption for All
The Issue
We, the undersigned parents, caregivers, educators, and community members, are calling on the Cheshire Board of Education and district leadership to adopt the Redistricting Scenario D that protects the stability, well-being, and continuity of all Cheshire elementary school children and communities.
Throughout the school modernization process, families have consistently been told that the district values social-emotional learning (SEL), stability, and minimizing disruption. Despite these assurances, several of the scenarios under consideration would move an unprecedented number of children across multiple elementary schools - uprooting them from trusted teachers, peer groups, and environments that support their development.
Such widespread disruption is unnecessary, inequitable, and inconsistent with the district’s stated priorities. Strong relationships, predictable routines, and a sense of belonging are essential to healthy child development. Any plan that moves large portions of students, regardless of the school they attend, undermines those principles and erodes trust in the process.
We are also concerned about the lack of transparency, the removal of less disruptive alternatives without meaningful public discussion, and the limited opportunities for families to engage with the decision-making. Cheshire families deserve a fair, open, student-centered process, not one that prioritizes logistics or cost over children’s stability.
We also ask families whose children may not be disrupted to consider the experience of those who will be. Many children stand to lose lifelong friends, trusted teachers, and the school communities they consider a second home. Empathy and solidarity are vital during this time. Even if a particular scenario does not affect your own family, it affects your child’s classmates, teammates, neighbors, and friends.
Please join us as we stand together for a redistricting plan that minimizes disruption and supports not just some children, but all of Cheshire’s elementary children.
We urge the Cheshire Board of Education to:
- Reduce unnecessary student movement and adopt Scenario D that creates the least amount of disruption for all Cheshire elementary children
- Ensure transparency, clarity, and honest communication throughout the process
- Prioritize SEL, relationships, and student well-being over short-term logistical convenience
- Honor the guiding principles shared throughout modernization, including stability, predictability, and community alignment
We respectfully ask district leaders to adopt Redistricting Scenario D that genuinely puts all Cheshire elementary children first and protects the relationships and communities that help them thrive.
