Keep Algonquin College Programs - Don't "Cancel" Our Future!

My name is Kelley Denham and I am a grad of the Social Service Worker Program at Algonquin College, Perth Campus. I am now a Registered Social Service Worker, employed full-time in the Town of Smiths Falls and am actively involved in my community. Before that, I was a struggling mother and low-wage earner and we were just barely surviving. The programs offered at Algonquin College saved my life and empowered me to be all that I could be. Cutting this program, among others, will spell economic and educational disaster for the local community. This looks a lot like they are preparing to close the only accredited college in Lanark County. Education is the bridge out of poverty. Don’t “cancel” our future!

Algonquin College says it's cancelling seven programs offered at its Ottawa, Pembroke and Perth campuses due to low enrolment.

Most of the programs will be cancelled at the Perth campus, including:

·         General and executive office administration.

·         Social service work.

·         Heritage and traditional masonry.

·         Carpentry and renovation.

The motive power technician program at the Pembroke campus and the kitchen and bath design program offered at the Ottawa campus will also be cancelled.

The 200 students currently enrolled in the programs will not be affected. Most will wrap up their studies this fall or next winter.

People won't be able to sign up for the programs in the coming academic year.

Claude Brulé, the college's senior vice-president of academics, said the programs are being suspended because not enough students are signing up, making the programs a financial burden on the college.
