Check your Dogsitters' Credentials to Protect our Pets.

Our kids are grown up and on their own, so we dote on our dogs like they are our babies. When my husband and I have to leave town, we always do our research to find the best dog sitter possible. I was happy when online pet sitting services like Rover came around, because it provides the promise of “peace of mind,” ensuring our pets’ safety if we use any of its sitters. So imagine my surprise when one of these sitters placed our two 6-pound Biewer terriers, K’lah and Gracie, in the same space as a 90-pound Dogo Argenti. When I received the phone call that K’lah had been killed, I couldn’t believe my ears.
On the website, this sitter claimed to have 48 years of dog behavioral experience. I assumed Rover had done due diligence and that her claims were legitimate. She told me she doesn’t mix big dogs and little dogs, so I trusted her. I have regretted it ever since.
This woman is entirely unlicensed, and she clearly lacks the experience and training to discern what it best for the dogs in her care. I wish she had been more honest with me, but I particularly wish Rover had done necessary background checks and weeded out those who don’t have the credentials they claim to have.
We could have avoided this tragedy, and knowing that kills me. Please join me in calling on Rover to verify its dog sitters’ claims and ensure that they have proper credentials, so that pet owners can have true peace of mind when using their service.K’Lah was still alive after the dog mauled her. Our poor daughter had to make the decision to put her down when the vet told her she had "severe trauma to the abdomen" and would not survive surgery. It has been truly heartbreaking for all of us.
When Rover found out about what happened to my little K'lah, they did the right thing and immediately removed this dog sitter from their site. But she never should have been listed there in the first place if they claim to hold our pets’ safety in the highest regard.
Our pets are our family. Please, let’s let Rover know that we demand accountability on their part. Please urge them to verify the claims of prospective pet sitters and ensure that they have all proper credentials before listing them on the site.
