Replace the Robert E Lee and Lewis and Clark statues in Charlottesville, VA

The Issue

These statues, standing in the heart of our city, do not show who we are as a community or the side of history that we should be honoring. We shouldn't honor human beings that have enslaved or oppressed other human beings based on their appearance, specifically their skin color. One may say, "These statues are historical monuments that should not be forgotten about." This statement is wrong because these monuments could be put in a museum. Plus, they could be replaced by statues of people like York, Sacagawea, Clara Barton, Leonard Grimes, or Paul M. Gaston to remind the community of heroes that are commonly forgotten when talking about Virginia's history. The statues that are standing today, do not reflect the amount of change that our country has gone through and still has to go through.
