Rea Farms School should be a 100% FULL-CHOICE magnet school

The Issue

On June 4, 2019, the Board of Education decided that Rea Farms would be used as a K-8 magnet school with 70% of the seats allocated to an attendance area consisting of Rea Farms, Waverly, and points south of Ardrey Kell Rd, east of Rea Rd to include Landen Glen.

Polo Ridge and Hawk Ridge, Jay M and Community House assignments were impacted.

Very few opportunities, if any, will exist for Ballantyne residents to attend the magnet school aside from those assigned to it.

An alternate plan put forward by the community would have had the new CMS Rea Farms facility opened as a 100% choice school, serving as a magnet for the entire Blue attendance zone, including the Jay M attendance area and all of west, southwest and south Charlotte west of Providence Road. No existing school boundaries would change and relief would be provided to our overcrowded schools as families chose to attend the new magnet facility.

Background Information

The undersigned ask that given the changes in CMS leadership since this vote, the full magnet option be reconsidered as it provides greater choice and diversity while fully compliant with the 2013 bond and providing much-needed relief across the Ballantyne/Providence area.
