Dear Members of the City Council,

    Now that Mayor Cannon has resigned as the Mayor of Charlotte I encourage you to hold a special election to fill his seat. The City Council does have the power to petition the General Assembly to do this becuase under G.S. 163-287 which states, "Any county, municipality, or any special district shall have authority to call special elections as permitted by law." It is not fair to the citizens of Charlotte that our Mayor will be someone we did not elect for one and three quarter years. The citizens deserve a voice in who will lead our city after the unfortunate situation arose surrounding Mayor Cannon. The people's trust has been broken and appointing someone and not giving the people a voice will not fix it. It takes the people having their voices heard and haveing a real discussion that we can begin to heal and regain trust in our city's government.
