Petition to Governor of Massachusetts Charlie Baker for High School Football

Petition to Governor of Massachusetts Charlie Baker for High School Football
The Issue
Please sign our petition on behalf of kids, parents, coaches, teachers, and administrators supporting a Fall Season for ALL sports, including football, which is currently categorized as higher risk. Massachusetts High School football players need your help in telling our State and School leaders that we support a schedule that includes ALL sports this Fall.
In signing, you recognize that that the safety and well-being of athletes and coaches is a priority, that special provisions will need to be made to protect the safety of players and coaches, that some players may choose to opt out of the season, and that adjustments and limitations may be necessary over the course of the fall season.
MIAA member teams have proposed the following safety changes: a shorter season, limited practice time, rule modifications and new required equipment including full face shields, mouth pieces attached to facemasks, the use of gloves, and changes to practice schedules including reduced contact. Additionally, we have helpful school and health agency documentation from other States who have already begun training and preparing for the season, some as early as August 1st. Massachusetts can pick from some of the best ideas, in addition to the ones MIAA has already recommended. With the benefits of staying outdoors and avoiding confined spaces such as locker rooms and meeting rooms, we think it better to start on time rather than deferring until later in the fall.
Football is currently the only Fall boys sport categorized as "Higher Risk" in Massachusetts. Its 19,000 participants from 330 schools include some of the most racially and socioeconomically diverse students who, under current circumstances, would be left without practices and games, even when other sports would begin on the tentative start date of September 14 that has been proposed.
Please sign our petition on behalf of ALL the student athletes in the State of Massachusetts this fall. Thank you!
