Stop Johns Island Land Purchase for Debris and Haul Site

The Issue

Charleston County Council is considering approval of the Charleston County's purchase of Grayson Oaks, a 95-acre parcel of land on Johns Island for $3.5M, near Main Road and Humbert Road to be used as a debris, mulching, and/or burning site, dirt mine, and/or staging site for DOT equipment. The county has given inconsistent and vague replies as to the exact use.

In addition to potential smoke and air quality hazards, John Island residents are increasingly concerned this property acquisition and its potential uses will result in hindered growth and development of the island, decreased property values, and increased traffic.

The county has yet to share an impact study for this proposed plan of use of the parcel and Johns Island residents feel that they have not had opportunity to voice their many concerns. There have been other proposed and previously evaluated sites which are both less expensive, and would have far less impact on existing neighborhoods and future development, and residents urge the Charleston County Council to consider alternative options.
