On Wednesday 17 December, after just one day, this petition had gained over 400 signatures, including numerous sector leaders. I have sent a copy of the petition with the names attached to the Charity Commission calling on them to open an investigation. Thank you to everyone who has signed, but we definitely need to increase the number of signatories. As the Charity Commission is currently saying no more than: ‘We are aware of the petition. We continue to actively engage with Oxfam GB to determine our next regulatory steps.’
Currently 561 people have signed the petition, but we are dismayed that there are more trolls, all over social media attacking Halima (for her ethic origin, her gender, and her disability) than there are people who have signed this petition. There are more of us, than them, and now is the time to stand up, speak out and demand, not just justice for Halima, but that the charitable sector becomes a safe place to work for everyone.
Halima Begum is a working-class woman of colour who has become a renowned sector leader, and a role model for many, but this is not about one person, it is about the integrity of the charitable sector. For the sake of clarity, we are not trying to damage Oxfam, instead we want it to live its values, and meet its objectives, but it cannot do that unless evidence of malpractice is addressed. Then, and only then, will it be possible for Oxfam to rise and become the best possible version of itself.
Please share details of this petition (https://www.change.org/Oxfam_Shame to your networks and ask people to sign.
Thank you,
John Page
