Growing up without a mother shapes a person in profound ways, and knowing someone like Gypsy Rose Blanchard could get away with contributing to her mother's death is unsettling. Clauddine Blanchard was a victim, and she did not deserve the fate she met. It was on June 14th, 2015 in Springfield, MO, that the tragic series of events culminated in her death. However, the full story reveals that Gypsy attempted to murder her mother even before then.

Gypsy Rose Blanchard shot her mother with a BB gun, thinking it was real. She has gone on to publicly brag about it in her book and in numerous recorded interviews. This lack of remorse, paired with her profiting from the narrative of her mother's murder, sends a disturbing message. Gypsy Rose benefitting from her mother’s death through media deals and publications without facing full accountability is not justice.

It's essential for the justice system to acknowledge this attempted murder and hold Gypsy accountable to prevent future exploitation of tragic situations for personal gain. There is no statute of limitations on a crime like this. While everyone deserves a chance at redemption, it's vital that actions have consequences, especially when they involve life and death.

This petition calls upon the Springfield Police Department and Greene County Prosecutor's Office to reevaluate past decisions and consider filing charges against Gypsy for her attempted murder of Clauddine Blanchard. Justice must be served not only for the memory of Clauddine but also to uphold the integrity of our legal system.

If you agree that Gypsy Rose should face charges for her actions and if you believe in justice for Clauddine, please sign this petition and help us deliver a message that every action, especially those with tragic outcomes, should have accountability attached to them. Your signature is a stand for justice.

The Decision Makers

Dan Patterson
Greene County Prosecuting Attorney
Responded
Gypsy Rose Blanchard was charged with murder, entered a guilty plea to murder in the second degree, and was sentenced to ten years in the Missouri Department of Corrections. With regard to Ms. Blanchard making money from a book or otherwise regarding the story, there is no Missouri law prohibiting her from doing so. Son of Sam laws were state laws designed to prevent criminals from profiting from their crimes by selling their stories to publishers, movie studios, or media outlets. The money earned would instead go to victims or their families. These laws got their name from David Berkowitz, the "Son of Sam" serial killer who terrorized New York City in the 1970s. When publishers offered him money for his story, New York passed the first such law in 1977. In 1991, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down New York's Son of Sam law in Simon & Schuster v. Crime Victims Board. The Court ruled 8-0 that the law violated the First Amendment. DAN PATTERSON Prosecuting Attorney
