The Issue

For 22 years, I was trapped in a cycle of abuse delivered by two different men. This abuse destroyed my life. I've lost my home, my children, and myself. I live every day on the brink, burdened by suicidality, struggling to cope through medication. The abuse wasn't just physical but also verbal, which has left me with various diagnosed mental health issues. Despite desperate cries for help, numerous agencies failed us, repeatedly letting us down. This isn't just my story; it's the reality for countless others.

Domestic abusers don't just harm physically—they annihilate the spirit, driving survivors into despair, isolating them from their loved ones, and often leading them to contemplate ending their lives. The traumatic scars these violations leave are akin to murder, slowly killing the victim from within. Tragically, it sometimes culminates in the survivor taking their own life, a tragic consequence directly stemming from prolonged abuse.

Current laws do not do justice to these survivors. Abusers continue on due to the leniency of penalties, emboldened to inflict further harm. It's time to redefine the ramifications for abusers and recognize the full extent of their crimes.

We need to amend the legal framework to charge domestic abusers with manslaughter when their actions result in severe psychological trauma or the victim’s suicide. This elevated charge would acknowledge the profound impact of domestic abuse. Furthermore, implementing stricter penalties would serve as a deterrent, potentially saving lives and delivering justice to those who can no longer speak for themselves.

The devastating impact of domestic abuse must be recognized as a crime equivalent to manslaughter. Encouraging judicial systems to adopt this perspective will not only amplify the voices of victims but also promote meaningful change.

Sign this petition to demand a legal reformation that holds domestic abusers accountable for the true extent of their deeds. Together, we can pave the way for a safer, more just society for survivors everywhere. Please support this crucial change.
