For many college students - the cost of tuition is high enough to prevent their attendance at an institution of higher education. However, Chapman University seems to care even less about the financial health of their students and adds a ridiculous housing cost to the equation. I myself have been personally affected by Chapman's continuous lack of regard for its students' finances and may not be able to return to Chapman next year due to the unaffordable cost of attendance.

Just one example: this year, Chapman "simplified" it's housing costs at Chapman Grand. But I think it's less about the simplification of the process, and more about their potential to make more money. Now, for a single room at Chapman Grand, the yearly cost is $14,500. Including half of August and half of May, that equates to more than $1,600 / month in rent. That also doesn't take into account the students who aren't in Orange during the two-week break in December nor interterm. If you want to SHARE a bedroom made for ONE person, that lowers the prices to $12,700 a year. Again, this is for a bedroom that students currently in Chapman Grand live alone in.

Additionally, this leaves students with only the alternative of living in orange housing wherever they can find it. If they even find an option, it can be in unsafe neighborhoods or further from campus than ideal. Also, landlords can inflate prices by $1000+ each year, knowing that students have no other options.

If Chapman University is working so hard to keep their students in Chapman owned housing... perhaps they should make their housing affordable for them. Sign this petition to let Chapman know that we are not just going to shovel out whatever amount of money they ask of us. If you have the money to build a new gym, you have the money to keep your student housing reasonable!
