Channel 5 must evict Biggins and Renee after biphobic comments
The Issue
This petition is to ask Channel 5 to eject housemates Christopher Biggins and Renee Graziano from the Celebrity Big Brother house after their biphobic comments on Monday (01/08/2016) evening.
In a discussion between the pair, Biggins said:
“The worst type of people are bisexuals, what it is is people not wanting to admit they're gay”
Followed by Renee’s:
"Yeah you have to pick a team, please pick a team you can pick any one you want"
Not only are there bisexual people in the house with them, but there are many bisexual viewers who would have considered this interaction as hate speech. It is utterly unacceptable and has already sparked media attention: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/aug/02/biphobia-celebrity-big-brother-christopher-biggins?CMP=twt_gu
Channel 5 has ejected housemates in the past for racist and homophobic speech, and it would be utterly hypocritical and disgusting not to do the same in this case of biphobia. It would be disrespecting and alienating thousands of viewers around the country.
Winston McKenzie was asked to leave after his homophobic comments. Andrew Tate was removed after his racist and homophobic language. Channel 5 cannot set this precedent and then fail to follow it in subsequent cases of hate speech.
Bi-erasure is a serious issue, and if the same sort of comments were made about the ‘L’ the ‘G’ or the ‘T’ part of LGBT community, Channel 5 would take immediate action. It is an outrage if they do not do the same for the bisexual community, and it would be an outrage if this would have happened in reference to the pansexual, asexual, queer, intersex, or any other alternative gender or sexual orientation too. We cannot allow ‘popular’ culture to devalue people in this manner, and dramatic action must be taken now.
