Hi everyone, First of all thank you so much for helping me reach 1,000 signatures. The petition is being signed nearly every day from people all over the world and received 320 signatures on 12/03 so please keep sharing as it just shows how quickly something can get around when it’s shared on social media. As some of you may know, April is sexual assault awareness month and child abuse prevention month. According to statistics, 1 out of every 6 women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime, and about 3 percent of men have experienced an attempted or completed rape in their lifetimes. On average, there are 321,500 victims (age 12 or older) of rape and sexual assault each year in the United States alone. According to Rape Crisis, approximately 85,000 women and 12,000 men are raped in England and Wales alone every year; that's roughly 11 rapes (of adults alone) every hour!! Nearly half a million adults are sexually assaulted in England and Wales each year. Only around 15% of those who experience sexual violence choose to report to the police and approximately 90% of those who are raped know their perpetrator. There are 42 million survivors of child sexual abuse living in the U.S. alone and 1 in every 20 children in the UK has been sexually abused. And this is only the ones which have been reported; it is estimated that the actual number is much higher in both the UK and the U.S. A rape crisis centre in the UK reported that 42% of their calls were adult survivors of child sexual abuse. The subject of rape and sexual abuse touches millions of people. The law needs changing here in the UK and if I were ever able to achieve the aim of this petition I would make it my mission to try and help people in my situation from all over the world because whatever age you are, rape is rape.
