Kalamazoo Public Schools has long prided itself on providing a well-rounded education and numerous opportunities for its students. However, the inclusion of SAT scores on transcripts sent to colleges could hinder, rather than help, many of our students during the college application process.

According to FairTest, nearly 1,800 colleges and universities have adopted test-optional policies allowing applicants to choose whether to include their SAT scores.  Several other school districts in our area including Portage Public Schools and Mattawan Consolidated Schools have already adopted this policy and do not report these scores.

Kalamazoo Public Schools should adopt a similar policy, ensuring that students can choose whether to include SAT scores on transcripts sent to colleges. This change will empower students to present their best achievements and capacities, without the marks of a standardized test influencing their potential opportunities.

We call on the Board of Education for Kalamazoo Public Schools to make this vital change in their transcript policy, better aligning with current educational standards, and ensuring equity for all students.
