Change the severity of sanctions Ole Miss Pi Kappa Alpha
As the parents of Pi Kappa Alpha, Gamma Iota, we are jointly asking for you to reconsider your decision to remove the fraternity from campus for the next four years. We do not condone hazing in any form, and we understand that the chapter has had very serious allegations against them. However, based on the following reasons we appeal to you to reconsider the severity of your decision:
1. More than half of the current members who stand to be removed are freshman. They signed on with PIKE with the understanding that they were part of a movement to reimagine fraternity life in a more positive way than before. They remain committed to this goal.
2. The alleged infraction is neither alcohol or violence related, and does not rise to a level warranting these harsh sanctions. They are being sanctioned for the actions of members who are no longer with the fraternity.
3. The chapter provides a second family for our boys and they infuse a great deal of philanthropy in the local community.
The nominal amount of students involved in the current incident have already been removed from the fraternity leaving their new brothers to bear the consequences of their actions.
The severity of this incident is not lost on the remaining members, however fraternity life played a large in their decision to enroll at Ole Miss. They are now left with a void, feeling disconnected. The young men have already lived through a pandemic and have suffered losses greater than could ever have been imagined. They have persevered and continued on to find a home at Ole Miss and Pi Kappa Alpha. As parents we ask you to let them continue.
We hope that you will reconsider a less severe sanction that does not impact these young men’s entire college experience at Ole Miss. We have encouraged our sons to be people who are part of the solution and we believe they are ready.
