As a Native Indigenous woman, I find it deeply unsettling each year when the holiday of "Thanksgiving" reminds me and others in my community of the painful history associated with this day. Thanksgiving, as widely celebrated, overshadows a history of colonialism, displacement, and genocide that my ancestors endured. It's often celebrated without acknowledging the tragic consequences that befell Native communities. This painful history should be recognized and reflected upon, rather than ignored and glossed over in the guise of celebration.

Renaming Thanksgiving to "Indigenous Feast Day" would be a meaningful step in acknowledging this past. It provides an opportunity to educate the broader public about the true history surrounding this date. It's about recognising the resilience, culture, and traditions of Indigenous people who have lived and thrived on this land for generations before colonial settlers arrived.

This change would not only honor Indigenous communities but also help in healing wounds caused by years of systemic injustices. It represents a small but significant step towards recognizing the rich and diverse contributions of Indigenous peoples to this nation.

"Indigenous Feast Day" could serve as a reminder for all people to reflect on Native cultures and traditions and to celebrate the rich heritage that Indigenous communities continuously contribute to the story of this land.
