Almost 100 years ago, in 1930, the historic name of Pine Lake in Haslett, Michigan, was changed to Lake Lansing, after the nearby capital. However, this change was dubious at best, lacking both popular and local legislative votes to enact the change. The change was pushed entirely by one man, Frank "Pine Lake" Johnson, a printer by trade, who said he "Sat under a tree one afternoon and made up my mind to just go buying." he bought up a bunch of land around the lake, dredging shorelines and swamp to build up what is now the road of lake drive, which surrounds the lake. So it was Johnson, not a politician, not the people of the community, who pushed for the name change. It was Johnson, a rich printer from out of town who bought up the land, destroyed the local environment, and decided to change the name of the lake on a whim because "there are dozens of Pine Lakes." this is utterly ridiculous. The new name does not even make sense, considering that the lake is not actually located in Lansing. Changing it back to Pine Lake would help Haslett and Meridian Township in general stand out as more than just another suburb of Lansing but as genuine communities in their own right, culturally and legally independent from the capital. It will bring renewed interest to the lake, helping the local economy from people wanting to check out the lake that recently got a new name. it will bring the garbage pollution surrounding the lake to more people's attention, attracting more people to clean up the lake. in brief, changing the name will;

1. undo an undemocratic decision made by one businessman that affected a community he wasnt from
2. help differentiate Haslett and Meridian Township in general from Lansing
3. improve the local economy through renewed interest in the lake because of tourism
4. improve the state of the lake and surrounding area from a renewed interest in cleaning up the lake
