Change the Marquette University High School's Lunch Program
Change the Marquette University High School's Lunch Program
The Issue
At the beginning of the Second semester, MUHS changed their meal program to a newer, healthier version. Now, on its own, this is not a big deal. In fact, it sounds much better for the students. However, that is only on the surface.
While the food is healthier, it is also in smaller portions, while at the same time being more expensive. Cheeseburgers went up 75% ($2.00-$3.50) in price, and all we got was a wheat bun, one leaf of lettuce, a slice of american cheese, and a pale burger that doesn't even look like a real burger.
Students have already been complaining about the mac & cheese. Apparently, the mac & cheese is more mac & nacho cheese. Not only does this fail to seem healthy, but is also unappealing taste wise.
Now, the cheapest entree is $3.00 (If I remember correctly). This is the Personal Pizza. The pizza has a crust of multi-grain wheat. Personally, I do not like seeds in my pizza and I am sure that there are others who have the same feeling. And although the price remained the same as last semester on this entrée, the amount of pizza you get is decreased greatly, as it has lost much of the crust.
Marquette is known as a school that offers a good jesuit education, while helping young men learn morals and grow in faith. It is hard to believe that Marquette would make the mistake by taking away a learning opportunity at lunch. In society outside of Marquette, healthy options are not the only options available. With fast food as a cheap option, which is a huge cause in obesity, and Marquette forcing students to eat only healthy food, it takes away a chance for students to not only learn to make choices on their own which is important, especially as a 1/4 of the student body moves onto college. This may also lead to students rebelling in their eating habits outside of school, because as shown in civilizations throughout history, citizens tend to resist doing things that are forced upon them. Is this an exaggeration? Maybe. Does it still make a valid point? I believe it does.
So, please sign this petition, so that we can at least show the faculty and the people that decided to create this new program that the students are not happy with it. Maybe we can return to something at least somewhat similar to our previous healthy choice.
