The Issue

I've entered the London Marathon ballot every year, hoping for a chance to participate in one of the most iconic marathon races in the world. Yet, year after year, my hopes are dashed as I fail to secure a spot, while I've seen others succeed multiple consecutive years. I’m not alone in this experience. Many passionate runners like myself have faced similar disappointments, dedicating time and energy to prepare, only to find that their luck didn't change.

The London Marathon is a symbol of endurance, perseverance, and community spirit, but the current ballot system seems to overlook the value of equitable opportunities for all aspiring participants. Under the existing system, some participants manage to gain entries year after year, leaving many others waiting on the sidelines. This not only dampens the spirit of fairness but also limits the chance for diverse and new voices in the running community to participate and benefit from this incredible event.

A fairer system is needed. One that allows the joy and opportunity to take part in the London Marathon to touch a broader spectrum of eager runners.

I propose a positive change: once an individual successfully gains entry through the ballot, they should be ineligible to enter again for three years. This modification ensures more individuals can experience the marathon while maintaining the thrill and anticipation of potential re-entry after the waiting period. They can of course gain a charity place.

Supporting this change isn't just about creating opportunities for more runners like me, but about fostering inclusivity and fairness in one of the world's most prestigious races. With your help, the London Marathon can become a beacon of equitable access, where new dreams are supported and the running community's diversity is celebrated.

I urge the London Marathon organizers to review and revise their current ballot system in favor of a more inclusive approach. Please sign this petition to ensure all aspiring marathoners have a fair shot at their dreams.
