Every year the Athens-Clarke County Government holds the Star Spangled Classic fireworks display at the Athens-Ben Epps Airport located directly across the street from the Athens-Clarke County Animal Shelter. Fireworks are loud and alarming for animals, and cause unnecessary stress for most dogs and cats. While most pets get to stay at home with their owners for comfort, those at the shelter must sit in their outdoor kennels stressed, confused, and alone during the fireworks show. While it is too late to relocate this year's display, we can speak up and let the county know that they must change the location next year for the sake of these poor animals.
