Change the laws on refugee mental health assessments
The Issue
Every day, I watch the news and see stories of refugees and migrants arriving in our country, fleeing from war-torn regions where they have faced unimaginable violence and trauma. These individuals, through no fault of their own, endure harsh conditions, and their mental well-being is often compromised as a result. Yet, when they arrive, they are not provided with adequate mental health support, leaving them to navigate their new lives without the necessary assistance. This is not just a humanitarian issue—it affects us all.
Current laws do not require a mental health assessment for refugees and migrants upon their arrival. This oversight can lead to significant challenges, both for those seeking asylum and for our communities. Many immigrants may carry the scars of their past, which, without proper support and intervention, can manifest in various ways that could be detrimental to both their well-being and public safety.
The solution is clear: we need to amend our laws to ensure that every refugee and migrant undergoes a comprehensive mental health assessment before being integrated into our society. This will not only provide them with the care and support they need but also help prevent potential issues that might arise from untreated psychological trauma.
Statistics show that close to 80% of refugees have experienced extreme violence and trauma, leading to depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and other mental health issues. By providing mandatory evaluations and appropriate mental health services, we can significantly improve their quality of life and foster a safer, more inclusive community for everyone.
By implementing these changes, we also show compassion and commitment to human rights, setting standards for fairness and decency. It is important to acknowledge our moral duty to support those who have been forced to leave their homes and embrace them with the humanity they deserve.
Please join me in calling upon our lawmakers to enact these necessary changes. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of refugees and migrants, and ensure that our communities remain safe and supportive. Sign this petition to demand action now.
