The Issue

For years, I have devoted my life to caring for animals, giving my heart to the creatures that are often voiceless in our world. It pains me deeply to see the rising number of pets abandoned by their owners, who act without regard to the well-being of their once-beloved companions. Abandoning a pet shouldn't be a temporary decision with reversible consequences. It's time we as a society take a stand and enforce laws to protect these innocent animals.

Currently, laws surrounding pet abandonment provide insufficient deterrence. Owners who abandon their pets often retain ownership rights, enabling them to reclaim the animal if found. This not only fails the abandoned pet but also places rescuers and animal welfare organisations in a difficult position. Lack of legal clarity can lead to situations where an animal is returned to an unsuitable environment, further endangering their well-being.

Animals depend on us for their safety and comfort. They have no voice to cry out when they're left alone, unfed, and unloved. According to the Rescue Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), approximately 2.7 million companion animals enter UK animal shelters every year. Many of these are abandoned pets. It's a harrowing statistic that highlights a significant failure in the responsibility we owe to our animals.

We can change this by amending current animal welfare laws to ensure that anyone abandoning a pet automatically forfeits all ownership rights. This will not only protect the abandoned animals but will also deter potential offenders by imposing real consequences.

Several countries have already implemented versions of such laws, providing a precedent for creating comprehensive legislation that ensures abandoned pets are not reclaimed by the very people who left them. Implementing stronger laws on a national level can facilitate rescues, foster more secure adoptions, and allow animal protection agencies to make informed decisions about the best long-term care for rescued animals without legal complications.

Sign this petition to urge lawmakers to prioritise animal welfare by changing the law. Together, we can give a voice to the voiceless and ensure all pets are cared for and loved.
