Change the law to require drivers to stop if they collide with a cat

Change the law to require drivers to stop if they collide with a cat
The Issue
As the law stands under current regulations of the 1988 Road Traffic Act, drivers must declare if they collide with a horse, dog or other farm animal while driving; however neither reporting nor seeking help from veterinarians is required by law when crashing into cats.
THIS MUST CHANGE.
On Friday evening 20/09/2024, I witnessed a driver hitting a large cat, no signs of slowing down and never slowed down to give a second thought after the incident. Now I appreciate that the law states no action is required in these circumstances but why? Why is a cat different to a horse or a dog? It is still someone’s family, a loved pet. Would a decent human being not stop? Well this driver didn’t.
Myself and my child were completely devastated by what we saw and immediately pulled over to help the poor defenceless cat, unfortunately deceased in the middle of the road. We did the right thing, we did what I believe everyone should do in that situation… STOP and help the poor animal. I moved the poor cat out of the road, and in to my car and I took him straight to the vets. The vets scanned him and contacted the owners.
The owners were absolutely devastated and they couldn’t thank me enough for taking their beloved pet to the vets. It really upsets me to think that, had I of not been in that place at that time this poor beautiful cat may have just been left.
IT IS NOT OK! THE LAW MUST CHANGE!
Thankfully this beautiful cat was not alone, and we gave as much respect and love to him whilst transporting him to the vets.
Please sign the petition, it’s time for the laws to change. It’s time to ensure that cats are respected in the same way a dog is respected in these circumstances.
