The Issue

Mergansers have been a significant presence in my life for a few years.
Now, I want to return the favor and be a voice for these exceptional creatures that have supported me through my personal journey.

Mergansers, excellent fishers, are not just another bird in our ecosystem—they are critical indicators of environmental health. Because they mainly consume fish, they help us keep track of the ecosystem's vitality. When fish populations dwindle, it signals potential environmental issues, ranging from pollution to climate change effects, that require our immediate attention.

Furthermore, due to their fish-based diet, mergansers are prone to bioaccumulating toxins. As these toxins amplify within their bodies, they become unsafe for human consumption, even though they may be legally hunted as game. It is crucial to emphasize that the presence of these toxins is an alarming indication of our ecosystem's health status.

Currently, in Florida, mergansers can tragically be found on the duck hunting list, posing a threat to their population and undermining the natural balance they help sustain. By allowing these birds to be hunted, we disregard the vital ecological information they provide.

This petition calls for legislative change to protect the mergansers, specifically in Florida, by removing them from the list of huntable duck species. This change not only safeguards a species that serves as a beacon of ecosystem health but also protects humans from potential toxin exposure by discouraging their consumption.

I urge you to sign this petition to help make your voice heard in support of these magnificent birds at risk. Your signature is a step towards a healthier environment and a balanced ecosystem where humans and wildlife thrive together.

By signing, you are not only supporting the propagation of healthy fish populations but are also advocating for an environment that nurtures recovery, resilience, and the ongoing symbiosis between humanity and nature. Let us lead by example; let us create an impact beyond Florida and echo this sentiment in other states too. Protect the mergansers, protect our ecosystem.
