Change the law for repeat domestic violence offenders
The Issue
After enduring ten harrowing years of domestic violence, I have finally found the courage to break free from the cycle of abuse. My abuser was sent to prison over seven times and served restraining orders meant to protect me. Yet, he repeatedly violated them, and now, he is on trial again for a brutal attack that left me unconscious in front of my children.
Each trial, each promise of protection, and each restraining order proved ineffective in providing long-term safety for me and my family. This is not just my story—countless others face similar terrifying realities where the system fails to protect victims and emboldens repeat offenders. It is time to stop the cycle and change the law.
Current legislation allows for repeated judicial leniency towards domestic violence offenders, blemishing the promise of safety for victims. A third-time offender of domestic violence should not be given the privilege of a trial that history shows will likely result in another release and, inevitably, more abuse.
We must advocate for legislation that automatically imposes stricter penalties and denies trial for those who torment and terrorize repeatedly. Studies have demonstrated that repeat offenders are particularly resistant to rehabilitation, posing a perpetual threat to their victims.
Domestic violence is a serious crime with long-lasting consequences not only for the victims but also for their families and entire communities. **According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, one in four women and one in seven men have faced severe violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime**, highlighting the widespread and urgent nature of this issue. In addressing repeat felony offenders swiftly and decisively, we can create a stronger deterrent against ongoing violence.
Let us send a strong message to policymakers that the justice system must prioritize the safety of survivors over the rights of those who abuse them repeatedly. No more trials. No more opportunities for repeat offenders to exploit the law and continue their heinous acts.
Join me in calling for a change in the law to protect survivors and hold offenders accountable in a meaningful way. Sign this petition and contribute to strengthening justice for all who have suffered and continue to live in fear.
