The Golden X Inn on the St Francis Xavier University campus is looking forward to reopening in the Fall of 2023 following new renovations. Part of the plans to encourage gender inclusivity at the Inn is to have a gender-neutral bathroom. However, the plans only include access to a shared single gender-neutral bathroom with multiple stalls available for all patrons to use. This has raised safety concerns for many members of the StFX community, including a large portion of the Golden X Inn staff. Amid the discussions surrounding sexual violence on campus, we believe that a single gender-neutral bathroom may result in increased occurrences. In the bar setting, it is extremely important for those particularly vulnerable to sexual violence to have a safe place to use. We do not want to diminish the importance and necessity of having a gender-neutral bathroom. Instead, we want to highlight the issues the current renovation plans pose regarding sexual violence, over-intoxication, substance use, and feelings of overall safety for all patrons. We propose that the governing body of the Golden X Inn consider alternatives to only having one shared bathroom.
