Change the Fireworks Ordinance in Daphne Alabama
Change the Fireworks Ordinance in Daphne Alabama
The Issue
Other than some small fireworks and sparklers, did you know that fireworks are illegal in the City of Daphne. See City Ordinance Chapter 14, Sec. 14-6.
Even though hundreds of people are shooting fireworks off during the holidays to have a good time and celebrate an important day, during this past 4th of July someone complained about the fireworks in our neighborhood and the police stopped by to give us a warning.
As a result I attended the Daphne City Council today to request that the ordinance be looked at, to be reconsidered, and to allow fireworks to be allowed around the 4th of July and New Years holidays. Spanish Ft allows fireworks and Mobile just passed an ordinance to allow them this past year.
What a painful experience to go to City Council. In a nutshell. After I put in a request for this issue to be considered (understanding safety, impacts on pets, and those suffering PTSD)...one of the council members gave her own personal story about a kid with a glass eye because of a fireworks accident and how we should watch YouTube to see how scary fireworks are. There was about 3 minutes of discussion. Ultimately the Daphne City Council did not take up the issue so the ordinance won't be changed. The council person said they are here to protect us from the dangers of fireworks (aka babysit us) and that was it. She cited the 1994 ordinance and stated they must have been so smart back then. I got the impression it was easier for them to say no and to move on..."Away with you peasant." What was most funny is that the police chief said they don't write tickets and only give warnings. So the purpose of this law/ordinance is what? It's keeping us safe how? Is it stopping the fireworks which are disturbing pets and those with PTSD? Is it helping the police? Nope...people are going to shoot off fireworks anyway.
Maybe a waste of time, but I wanted to send it out to Daphne to gauge the interest in this issue. No doubt there are people on both sides. I would request you please be polite and just let people know your thoughts. Yes we know about safety, pets, PTSD, so no need to go on about that, but I'm hoping to get your thoughts on whether you are FOR changing this ordinance or AGAINST. Speaking to the actual council members was a total waste of time, but if the people speak...they will listen (especially the opinionated lady at the end of the table who is running city government based on her own personal experience, not for the citizens of Daphne)...hilarious!! Anyway, appreciate your thoughts. Depending on responses I will either let this go or go back to City Council and bring this up again and ask them to reconsider and get this useless "nanny state" law changed! Thanks for your thoughts everyone!
