Change the cellphone policy at Fairfax High School
The Issue
I recently experienced what I believe is an overly harsh punishment for using my cellphone. After receiving an urgent notification from work, I used my phone in an empty gym locker room to attend to it. As this was my first offense, I was issued a one-hour detention. While I understand putting cellphones away during class time, I believe the punishment for cellphone usage are overly harsh and unfair.
The current rules seem overly strict and don't account for the nuances of each situation. Many students face emergencies or urgent matters requiring immediate attention that a cellphone can facilitate. For instance, in situations like mine, where I was trying to communicate with my boss to promptly adjust my work schedule, punishment feels disproportionate. The policy lacks flexibility and ignores the varying contexts under which students may need to use their phones.
Schools around the country are increasingly acknowledging the importance of adapting policies to balance discipline with the reality of students' lives. According to a 2023 report by the National Education Association, 73% of schools with flexible cellphone policies have seen improved adherence to rules, as students felt more respected and understood.
I propose that our school adjust its policy to allow for discretion in cases like mine, where the phone use doesn't disrupt the learning environment. These changes could ensure consequences are fair and equip students to use digital tools responsibly. Situations like mine don’t just happen to me, I’ve heard several accounts from my friends and siblings of the same draconian punishments that they had to endure. I even saw someone getting their headphones confiscated even though it was a sensory aid, which shouldn’t happen in the first place with the current rules!
By signing this petition, you support a fair revision of the cellphone policy that takes into account the legitimate needs and realities of students. This petition is focused on changing the punishments for cellphone usage, it is not proposing that they should always be allowed or that there should be no punishment, just that the punishment itself should be reevaluated. Please sign this petition to help advocate for a constructive change.
