Change the CDA School Board's Recent Ban PEDS
Change the CDA School Board's Recent Ban PEDS
The Issue
I always loved music. As a student, music was not just a respite but a sanctuary for me. It was instrumental in shaping my personality, helping me fight stressful moments, and nurturing my creativity. However, our beloved school, governed by the CDA school board, has implemented changes to the PED policy, compromising music and other aspects of our student life.
These new rules, including severe restrictions on the usage of Personal Electronic Devices (PED), are stifling our ability to express ourselves fully, including through music which is dear to many. Statistics from the National Association for Music Education reveal that schools with music programs have significantly higher graduation rates (90.2% compared to 72.9%). Furthermore, students who participate in music are 1.5 times more likely to report feeling satisfied in school (National Association for Music Education, 2019).
This policy reform doesn't just affect our love for music but threatens to impair our overall school performance, creativity, and mental well-being. The board's decision lacked student consultation, presenting a top-down approach that is contrary to the principles of a democratic educational system.
We're not standing against discipline. We're advocating for a balance — a balance that respects our rights and interests while maintaining the necessity for order and proper conduct. We're calling on the CDA school board to reconsider the changes to the PED policy, to ensure it's reflective of diverse educational needs and flexible enough to accommodate activities that promote personality and academic growth.
Each signature on this petition means one step closer to making the CDA school board realize that their decision is not universally accepted, and changes are required. Show your support and sign this petition today. Let's secure the place of music and freedom in our school.
