Change Texas's State Bird to the Golden-cheeked Warbler

The Issue

We propose that the state of Texas change its official state bird from the northern mockingbird to the golden-cheeked warbler (Setophaga chrysoparia).

The golden-cheeked warbler is a beautiful yellow and black bird with a melodic song that breeds only in central Texas and nowhere else in the world. If Texas were to adopt the golden-cheeked warbler, we would be the only state in the country to call this lovely bird our own. By contrast, the drab greyish-brown northern mockingbird is the state bird of four other states besides Texas: Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi, and Tennessee.

Adopting the golden-cheeked warbler as our state bird would also bring much-needed attention to protecting this endangered species by preserving its Edwards Plateau juniper-oak woodlands breeding grounds, some of the most beautiful natural landscape in Texas, which is imperiled by development and advancing urban sprawl.

Besides, mockingbirds are notoriously aggressive towards other animals, including other birds and squirrels, and will dive-bomb family pets; they're kind of assholes.
