Change St. Gabriel’s Skirt Length Policy

Petition to Review St. Gabriel School’s Skirt-Length Policy
To the Administration of St. Gabriel School and School Leadership,
We, the undersigned parents and members of the St. Gabriel community, respectfully ask the administration to review the school’s current skirt-length policy and consider whether the existing standard is appropriate, practical, and consistent with comparable Catholic schools in the Louisville area.
The Current Policy
St. Gabriel currently requires uniform skirts to fall to the top of the knee/kneecap.
We understand and support the school’s desire to maintain modesty, professionalism, consistency, and an appropriate school environment. Our concern is not with having a dress code or maintaining standards. Rather, we believe the current skirt-length requirement deserves thoughtful reconsideration.
How St. Gabriel Compares
For comparison, the stated skirt-length guidelines at several area Catholic schools include:
● Sacred Heart Academy: 1 inch below the fingertips
● Assumption High School: 1 inch below the fingertips
● Presentation Academy: 3 inches above the knee
● Mercy High School: 5 inches above the knee
● St. Albert: 1 inch below the fingertips
● St. Raphael: 3 inches above the knee
● Holy Spirit: 4 inches above the knee
● St. Bernard: 5 inches above the knee
● St. Michael: 5 inches above the knee
● St. Athanasius: 5 inches above the knee
● St. Gabriel: to the top of the knee
This comparison raises a reasonable question about whether St. Gabriel’s current requirement is unnecessarily restrictive compared with the standards used by other Catholic schools in our community.
The Practical Concern for Families
The current requirement has also created practical difficulties for some families purchasing uniforms.
Parents have reported going to Shaheens following uniform checks and being told that skirts purchased in the appropriate size are not intended to be worn at the length currently being required. Some families have consequently felt the need to purchase larger skirts and have them altered or taken in simply to achieve the required length.
We believe a uniform policy should be reasonably achievable using the school’s approved uniform options and should not create unnecessary additional expense or alteration requirements for families.
Consistency and Fairness
We also respectfully ask the school to consider how dress expectations are communicated and applied throughout the school community.
Students are expected to meet specific uniform and skirt-length requirements. At the same time, parents and students have observed instances in which adult employees or staff members appear to wear skirts or dresses that would not meet the same length standard expected of students.
We recognize that staff and student dress codes may appropriately differ. However, when there is a noticeable difference between the expectations placed on students and the appearance standards observed among adults within the same school environment, it can create questions about consistency and fairness.
We believe clear communication about the distinction between student and staff dress standards would help prevent confusion and ensure that students understand the purpose behind the policies they are expected to follow.
What We Are Asking For
We respectfully ask St. Gabriel School administration to:
1. Review the current skirt-length requirement for students.
2. Consider whether a revised standard could maintain modesty and professionalism while allowing a more practical and age-appropriate uniform length.
3. Review the uniform requirements used by comparable Catholic schools in the Louisville area when considering any changes.
4. Evaluate the practical and financial impact the current requirement has on families purchasing and altering approved uniforms.
5. Clearly communicate the dress standards for both students and staff so that expectations are understood and consistent.
6. Invite parent feedback and participation in the review of the uniform policy before making future changes.
Our Goal
This petition is not an effort to eliminate dress standards or compromise the values of St. Gabriel School.
Our goal is to encourage an open and constructive conversation about consistency, fairness, practicality, and the overall appearance of the school uniform.
We believe St. Gabriel can maintain appropriate standards of modesty and professionalism while also establishing a skirt-length policy that is practical for families and more consistent with the standards used by other Catholic schools in our community.
We respectfully ask the administration to hear the concerns of St. Gabriel families and undertake a formal review of the current skirt-length policy.
Please sign this petition if you support asking St. Gabriel School to review its current skirt-length policy and engage parents in that conversation.
