The Issue

Hi my name is Anna I’m one of the millions of servers in this nation  I’ve decided to take a step forward and voice my concerns. We want a higher wage that’s liveable! I myself struggle to make ends meet  I’m 22 I live with my Mom, trying to get into school, save for a car, and save money for my own place one day!

The $2.13 wage an hour for servers can lead to several negative effects. Primarily, this low base pay often results in servers relying heavily on tips to make a livable income, which can create financial instability, especially during slow shifts or in less busy establishments. This wage structure can also contribute to high turnover rates, as servers may seek better-paying opportunities elsewhere, leading to a lack of experienced staff and inconsistent service quality. Additionally, the pressure to earn tips can foster an unhealthy work environment, where servers feel compelled to prioritize customer satisfaction over their own well-being.

If servers continue to be paid $2.13 an hour, several aspects will likely remain the same. The reliance on tips will persist, meaning servers will still depend on customer gratuities to supplement their income. This wage structure will likely continue to create financial instability for many servers, as their earnings can fluctuate significantly based on the volume of customers and the generosity of tips. Additionally, the challenges related to high turnover rates and a lack of job security will remain, affecting both the work environment and the quality of service provided to customers. Overall, the fundamental issues tied to low base pay will continue to impact the server industry.

The current economic climate, with rising inflation and living costs, makes a higher hourly rate for servers necessary.  Many servers struggle to make ends meet on the current minimum wage plus tips, and a raise would improve their financial stability and quality of life.  Raising the minimum wage could also improve employee retention and reduce turnover in the restaurant industry.
