Change school hours at Benet Academy to improve student wellbeing
The Issue
As a student at Benet Academy, I often find myself exhausted by the end of the school day. The current schedule drains both my energy and morale, leaving little time for other activities or interests I genuinely enjoy. Many of my peers share my sentiment—we're strapped for time, trying to balance sleep, schoolwork, and our personal lives.
Schools ending earlier is not just a personal wish; it's a scientifically-backed necessity for improving student wellbeing. Many studies have shown that teenagers have different sleep cycles compared to adults, necessitating more rest to function optimally. Physiological changes during adolescence shift the natural sleep-wake cycle, making late school end times counterproductive.
Ending school earlier would also allow students to engage more in extracurricular activities, explore personal interests, and amplify their learning and development outside the traditional academic curriculum. It provides an opportunity for students to practice time management, learn new skills, join sports teams, volunteer, or even take part in community service—activities that are crucial for holistic development.
Changing the school hours at Benet Academy to end at 12:20 PM could significantly boost student morale. A rejuvenated student is not only more capable of engaging with schoolwork but also better prepared for challenges outside of academia. This change could lead to higher student satisfaction, improved mental health, and superior academic results.
We urge the Benet Academy administration to consider this proposal seriously. By aligning school hours with students' natural sleep needs and allowing more time for personal development, we'll create a healthier and more balanced school environment.
