The Issue

Many students, including myself, face unnecessary challenges due to outdated and rigid school dress code policies. One major issue is the financial strain these policies place on families. Not everyone can afford to buy an entirely new wardrobe just to meet specific color or style requirements. For many of us, what we already have is all we can rely on, yet current policies often fail to acknowledge this reality.

It’s not just about the colors or styles demanded by schools—students are frequently reprimanded for minor differences, like the shade of a t-shirt. I ask, how does the exact hue of my clothing affect my ability to learn? Instead of focusing on supporting students’ academic success, we’re forced to worry about arbitrary dress code rules.

These policies disproportionately impact students from low-income families, who may face disciplinary actions not because of their behavior or performance, but because of something as trivial as wearing the “wrong” shade. Many students don’t dress to be sexualized; they dress to feel confident and comfortable in their own skin.

Sending students to in-school suspension for minor dress code violations, like wearing the wrong shade of blue, leads to missed class time and lost learning opportunities. Being in ISS is not a better alternative to wearing clothes that help us feel comfortable and happy.

I believe schools should adopt flexible, inclusive dress codes that allow for affordable, neutral-colored clothing while respecting students’ comfort and self-expression. By shifting the focus away from strict dress codes and toward fostering a safe, supportive environment, schools can prioritize what truly matters: education and personal growth.

I ask you to support this change by signing the petition to update dress code policies. Together, we can create schools that empower students rather than restrict them.
