The Issue

I’ve lived in Rohnert Park for several years, and during my time here, I've come to love our community. It's a vibrant, growing city with incredible potential, and the people here deserve a say in how it's governed. That's why I believe it's time for us as a community to take a crucial step forward in our democracy and empower the residents of Rohnert Park by allowing them to elect our mayor directly, rather than sticking with the current rotating system amongst City Council members.

Currently, Rohnert Park stands as one of the few cities still utilizing a rotating system to appoint its mayor. This method not only undermines the direct democratic process but also circumvents the will of the residents who should have an active hand in selecting the individual who represents us at the highest community level. This is not merely about shifting municipal operations but is fundamentally about ensuring that the voices of Rohnert Park’s citizens are heard and respected.

By enabling the public to vote for the mayor, we can ensure that the leadership reflects the values and priorities of our city’s people. Direct elections will foster greater accountability as the mayor would be more answerable to the constituents who elect them, and it would open the door to diverse candidates who might otherwise not have had the opportunity to lead due to the closed system currently in place.

Looking at examples from other cities that have already adopted this system shows significant improvements in local governance, with mayors who are more in tune with the public's expectations and who drive initiatives that truly benefit the community. There is a stronger connection between the citizens and their leaders when they have the power to choose them.

To achieve this, we propose a transition plan: Firstly, we need a ballot measure to allow the people of Rohnert Park to decide whether they want this change. Public forums can be organized to inform and engage residents so that they understand the implications and the benefits of such a change. Furthermore, establishing clear election procedures in advance will ensure a seamless transformation of the mayoral selection process.

By championing this cause, we can enhance democratic values and foster a more involved and empowered community. Let us stand together to make our voices heard and ensure that we have a direct say in selecting our city's leadership. Please join me in signing this petition to initiate direct mayoral elections in Rohnert Park. Your support is vital in bringing this much-needed change to our beloved city.
