For too long Australia justice system has sat on the back benches whilst our people are slaughtered. Every nine days a woman is lost to domestic violence, every 11 days a man is lost to domestic violence. All these years those sitting in the courtroom are comfortable people living a comfortable life, doing their job, or so it seems. 

My name is Emily and I am a victim, no, survivor, of domestic violence, not just physical where he used me as his own personal punching bag but emotionally, telling me to kill myself because him and the kids would be better off without me and financially, he wouldn’t let me spend money on things we needed instead chose to buy alcohol and drugs, I was constantly asking the neighbours for nappies of scrounging up coins to try and buy formula, finally he would isolate me from my friends and family by forcing me to hide my injuries when someone came to see us, locking myself in the room saying I felt unwell. 

Everyday I would wake up and look in the bathroom mirror, a black eye or bruises on my body staring back at me wondering if he would just kill me next time because I couldn’t do it anymore.

Since leaving him in 2019 he has since abused two more people he was in relationships with and got off each time playing the mental health card and no one will help him. The man doesn’t want help, he wants people to feel sorry for him. He didn’t take court mandated therapy seriously, he would lie and be the perfect human and they would discharge him from the programs early. His type of people know how to cheat and abuse the system, we cannot allow this any longer. 

I am calling for our federal and national governments to overhaul the justice system to ensure our people feel safe. I’m calling for our police forces to be able to act when someone says they are fearing for their lives. I’m calling for no more deaths of people trying to live. 

No one should feel unsafe in their own home.
