Change penalties for road rage to protect our loved ones
The Issue
My name is Diane and I am a grieving mother whose life was shattered on September 6, 2026. My 32-year-old son became the victim of a senseless act of road rage. It all began with a man jumping into my son's car during a routine drive, attempting to initiate a physical altercation. My son, in a bid to protect himself, drove away, and the man fell out.
However, this singular encounter spiraled into a horrifying vendetta. This man relentlessly harassed my son for a month, setting his work truck ablaze and attempting to burn down a home he mistakenly thought was my son's. Ultimately, the nightmare culminated in the most tragic way possible: he shot my son in front of our family on a Sunday morning.
The current penalties for road rage are not sufficient to deter such violent behavior. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, approximately two-thirds of fatalities from traffic incidents are due to aggressive driving, with an increasing trend over the years. This troubling statistic highlights a dire need for stronger, more effective penalties to prevent further loss of innocent lives.
I propose that we implement stringent penalties for acts of road rage, including mandatory imprisonment, substantial fines, and compulsory anger management counseling for offenders. These measures can significantly deter potential aggressors and hold perpetrators accountable for their actions. Additionally, I wish to create a legacy for my son by naming this initiative the Donnie Nave Act, to ensure his memory lives on through positive change.
We cannot let another family endure the pain that we have suffered. By showing our collective outrage and support, we can drive legislative reform to establish safer roads for everyone. Let's urge our lawmakers to act decisively and protect our communities from the terror and devastation born from road rage.
