Change our half days to Fridays in Oak Park School District

The Issue

Our Oak Park community is incredibly important to us, and as parents, we cherish the opportunity to foster friendships among our children. Watching our kids build lifelong friendships is not just joyful, but essential in contributing to their social and emotional development. My child, like many others in our school, has friends in other Oak Park Unified Schools. These schools have wisely chosen Friday as their half day, providing the perfect opportunity for families to coordinate after-school activities, which nurture these invaluable connections.

However, our school currently holds half days on Wednesday, making it challenging for us to arrange shared activities, such as picnics and playdates. For many parents, Fridays offer a unique chance to leave work slightly earlier, easing the pressure of juggling work commitments and family time. It is also important for those taking advantage of the Fridays only Club.

Aligning our half days with the rest of the Oak Park Unified School District not only facilitates better scheduling for families but also unifies our community. It allows children across various schools to come together more freely, strengthening our community bonds and supporting parents who work tirelessly throughout the week.

Research consistently shows that family engagement and community ties significantly enhance children's academic and developmental outcomes. By adjusting our schedule to match the rest of the district, we are promoting an environment where our children can flourish both academically and socially.

Let's urge our school leaders to consider this small yet impactful change. Help us synchronize our school's schedule with the other Oak Park schools for the benefit of our children and families. Together, we can make Fridays a day that fosters friendship and family time.
