For over 30 years, we, the residents of Windwood Green Condominium in Mississauga, have safely used propane gas barbecues without a single incident. However, recently the Property Management has informed us that we will not be permitted to use propane gas barbecues according to the condo rules and we are only permitted electric barbecues. This shift not only impacts our lifestyle but also disregards our impeccable safety record.

Gas barbecues are known for their ability to provide superior heat control and even distribution compared to their electric counterparts (source: Consumer Reports). Moreover, they offer a unique flavor that cannot be replicated by electric grills. The restriction on gas barbecues is therefore not just an inconvenience; it's a compromise on the quality of life we've enjoyed for decades.

We understand that safety is paramount and we care about the safety of our shared home and the safety of our neighbours. Yet it's worth noting that when used responsibly—as we have demonstrated over three decades—propane gas barbecues pose no greater risk than other household appliances (source: National Fire Protection Association). In fact, electrical appliances historically cause more residential fires compared to gas barbecues. Additionally, this rule does not take into account that our balconies are made of non-combustible materials such as stucco, concrete, brick and glass.

We demand that this rule outlawing gas barbecues be changed and that we be allowed to continue using gas barbecues responsibly as we have done for so many years. We believe this will uphold both our right to choose how we live and ensure continued adherence to safety standards.
