The Issue

The NHS, is revered globally for its commitment to providing free-at-the-point-of-use service to all citizens. However, an alarming issue that undermines the integrity of this institution is the systemic dismissal of complaints against General Practitioners (GPs). This not only erodes public trust but also potentially endangers patients' well-being.

I know, as I have experienced it.  Brick walls; invalidation, flat out denial; gaslighting, hostility and even worrying retaliations/double-downing featured during my serious, evidenced complaints against a Doctor, all in the name of patient safety.

A lot of underhanded behaviour occurred during the complaints process - I thought I could trust these Doctors.

Statistics indicate that a significant number of complaints filed by patients about their experiences with GPs are either dismissed without thorough investigation or inadequately addressed for numerous reasons.

According to reports from reputable oversight bodies, there exists a trend where serious grievances are minimized, and patients are left without proper recourse. This systemic flaw can lead to a cycle of repeated errors in medical practice, ultimately diminishing the quality of care provided to the public.

One of the primary reasons for this institutional dismissal is the lack of an independent review process.  Complaints are often handled internally, leading to potential conflicts of interest and a lack of accountability.  Furthermore, the current system lacks transparency, leaving patients in the dark about the status and outcome of their complaints.

To address this issue, we propose the establishment of an independent body dedicated to reviewing and managing complaints against GPs in surgeries within the NHS.

The PHSO is an independent complaints 'final outcome' review organisation, should you escalate your concerns, however, there is no guarantee they will take up your case or they may only deal with certain aspects of it, not understand the complaint; even engage in systemic bias, meaning it lays unresolved - it isn't a final solution.

Patients need to be aware that they can complain to either the surgery or the ICB but not both under legislation.

This additional independent review body would operate with complete transparency, providing both the healthcare professionals and the complainants with a fair process. Additionally, implementing regular audits on the handling of complaints can ensure adherence to best practices and improve trust in the system.

It is essential that the voices of patients are heard and that their concerns are taken seriously.  The current environment of dismissal not only silences critical feedback but also hinders the ability to learn from mistakes and improve healthcare services.

For staff; speak out!

Freedom to Speak Up (FTSU) Guardians are independent, impartial staff members appointed within NHS and healthcare organizations in England to support workers in raising concerns safely. Created following Sir Robert Francis’s 2015 inquiry, they help staff voice issues regarding patient safety, bullying, or workplace barriers without fear of reprisal.

By signing this petition, you are advocating for a more transparent, accountable, and patient-centered approach to addressing complaints within the NHS.
