A horrible thing happened at the Currituck Animal shelter. The person responsible needs to be fired. The person in question also runs a local 501c rescue. The person in charge didn’t make a good decision when it came to euthanizing 30 cat/kittens without a vets advice or positive test results. WE NEED TO HOLD THEM RESPONSIBLE FOR THE BAD DECISIONS. PLEASE READ THE POST DOWN BELOW FROM THE SPCA. THE SPCA IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS HORRIBLE DEED. THE CURRITUCK ANIMAL SHELTER IS RESPONSIBLE. Please help make this wrong right. 

We did not post this information lightly. We have always supported the Animal Shelter but feel that they need to be more transparent which would be beneficial to all. Some changes need to be implemented. Even if we weren’t there that day or don’t know exactly what was going on in the intake room with the kitties, we know enough to say that we, the CSPCA , who ran the shelter for 2 years would NOT have euthanized 30 cats without a Doctor’s Diagnosis . Never. The cats were isolated so the virus could not have spread any further. Managers of other shelters have confirmed that they would have handled this very differently FROM THE WAY IT WAS DONE.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE:

We are hoping that this will clear up some of the questions surrounding the mass euthanization of around 30 cats at the Currituck Animal Shelter (We do not run the shelter) during the week of July 7. We will not be using names of anyone involved but we have spoken to two of the parties involved , the vets office and the cat rescue who spoke to us freely . This is what we know:

During the week of July 7 a cat rescue from Virginia Beach came to the shelter and picked up five kittens.
Soon after the pick up, the rescue called the shelter to let them know that two of the kittens were experiencing symptoms of what they thought was Calicivirus. However they did not have a confirmed diagnosis. The cat rescue did call the shelter back within a short period of time to let them know that the two kittens thought to have the virus were doing fine. During that call they were told that a whole room of cats had been euthanized, approximately 30 is what we know. The whole intake room. That shocked and upset them because they had given them information that they felt had prompted the euthanization.

We know that the Vet of Record for the shelter (Moyock Animal Hospital) was not contacted for a consult or diagnosis . We spoke to a representative from the vets office which prompted them to call the shelter.
They spoke to the shelter manager and ask her if she had a confirmed diagnosis.
They were told by the shelter manager that there was a confirmed diagnoses and that they had received that diagnosis from the cat rescue.
We know that the cat rescue did not have a diagnosis because we also spoke to them . The two kittens that they thought had the virus turned out to be fine , healthy kittens.
We do not know why the shelter made a determination to euthanize all of the cats in the intake room and we do not know why they didn’t consult the Vet of Record. The Vet of Record is paid by the county to oversee the medical needs of the shelter including drugs administered. The decision the shelter made to euthanize a whole room full of cats was made by people who do not have a license to practice veterinary medicine yet they took it upon themselves to diagnose and euthanize a large number of cats. Many of them nursing mothers and kittens.
We know that the Calicivirus is very contagious and can be deadly . There are different forms of the virus . We do know that there is at least one form of the virus that can be mild and is treatable .
If such freedoms are given to the shelter staff then transparency is key . Shouldn’t our county take a long look at their actions and make changes that will better the professionalism of the shelter? We know a big concern for everyone is that the shelter manager told the Vet of Record’s office when asked, that she had a diagnosis when she did not. She also consulted her vet that she uses for her Rescue instead of Moyock Animal Hospital . None of the animals were seen by that vet.
We are disappointed and surprised by what we know and we felt it better to give you only the facts that we uncovered . If you have any issues with the shelter and their decisions you should contact our County Manager and set up a meeting, our Board of Commissioners, and talk to the Manager and or the Director of the animal shelter. We have not spoken to them.
