Change New York emissions regulations to tier 2
The Issue
I am facing 15 days in jail for simply owning a truck that runs more efficiently than the manufacturer originally produced. This isn't just a personal issue—it's a problem that affects countless Americans who strive to achieve better fuel efficiency in their vehicles. It's time for New York state to update its emissions regulations to Tier 2 standards, which reflect current technological advancements and align with the rest of the country's progression.
Currently, New York follows regulations that are outdated and fail to accommodate for modern improvements in vehicle technology. As a result, people like me are criminalised for attempting to utilise more efficient fuel and technology. A shift to Tier 2 standards would not only eliminate such unjust punishments but also encourage advancements in cleaner and more efficient automotive technologies.
Based on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines, Tier 2 regulations provide a more balanced approach to emissions control, prioritising both environmental health and technological innovation. These newer standards also facilitate broader national conformity, reducing the patchwork regulations that manufacturers and consumers struggle with across different states.
Moreover, adopting Tier 2 standards would support an overall reduction in vehicular emissions, contributing to cleaner air, improved public health, and a better quality of life for all residents of New York. These benefits extend beyond individual drivers; they bolster statewide environmental goals and align New York with leading states in sustainability and innovation.
I understand the importance of regulating emissions. However, American citizens should not be penalized for doing their part to enhance efficiency and reduce pollution. This is why I'm calling on the State of New York to take action now. We need a regulatory framework that rewards progress and fosters innovation while ensuring environmental protection.
