Change Netflix’s Household Settings for College Students

Change Netflix’s Household Settings for College Students
The Issue
As a college student, transitioning to university life is already challenging. The stress of making new friends and balancing homework and readings is difficult enough, and at the end of a hard day, I like to watch my favorite shows. After a particularly difficult day where I hurt my ankle badly, I needed to calm down a bit. But when I came back to my dorm, I discovered that I was removed from my family's Netflix household. Why? Simply because I'm pursuing my education and am staying at college, away from home. Many of my favorite TV shows are Netflix Exclusive. Squid Games and Alice in Borderland are two of my favorites, and I can’t watch them anywhere else. One of the hardest parts about being away at college is feeling like I’m isolated and losing my role in the family, and it seems like Netflix is pushing this idea as well. But college students often aren’t independent, let alone financially stable enough to afford the luxury of owning our own subscriptions. Netflix's household rule currently restricts account use to those residing in the same physical location, unintentionally excluding college students who are studying away from home. This restriction disproportionately affects students. 71% of students report struggling with finances already due to managing other expenses such as tuition, books, and basic living costs. We kindly ask Netflix to revise this policy and consider college students as part of their family household plan, even when they are away at school. A simple solution could be verifying student status through a .edu email address and allowing them to maintain their household connection. This change would not only show an understanding of the realities faced by students but also bolster Netflix's image as a student-friendly platform. College is already an expensive venture, and an additional financial burden of an extra membership is not possible for everyone. Let's urge Netflix to make this necessary change. Support college students by signing this petition to change Netflix’s household rule for those who are pursuing higher education away from home. -Eden Noelle Avera, a first-year student at Trinity University
